Diagnosis. It's so often a rushed decision made by a medical professional which then sticks with a person for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, the health care system is not set up to properly assess and diagnose mental health issues. The amount of time that is required is unfortunately not always available to the providers responsible for determining the dianosis.
Personally, I have mixed feelings on diagnoses. I think that having an accurate diagnosis can dictate the most appropriate treatment course... but I also think that people should be treated for whatever issues they present with at that time (rather than becoming reliant on previous diagnoses).
Because I understand the importance of good diagnoses, I offer the Diagnostic Assessment service. This will consist of a 90 - 120 minute diagnostic assessment. Then, I will provide a complete write up: a summary of the interview and my diagnostic impression. Additionally, when applicable, I will provide my clinical opinion of any previous diagnoses. Lastly, treatment recommendations will be made that will be specific to the functional impairments identified in the assessment. On average, diagnostic assessment write ups are 7-10 pages long.
After I complete the write up, we will meet for another 30 min. session to discuss the findings and treatment recommendations. You will be provided with your write up, and with another sheet that lists your diagnoses (if any) for you to provide your other health care providers. This is also a time to ask any questions.
Recovery can be difficult. Having an accurate diagnosis can help.
