Couples counseling

Couples Counseling

No relationship is without it's problems.  Couples Counseling is a great option for anyone who is looking to improve their relationship.  I take a unique spin on couples counseling, which merges my areas of expertise.  I believe that each person brings a unique lived experience to the relationship.  Often times, this is what brings people together.  Other times, unresolved hurts or cognitive distortions we've learned previously in life cause us to behave in unhealthy or unproductive ways in relationships.  In couples counseling, we will look at how to improve the dynamics within the couple, with the keen awareness that this might mean individual work to reprocess (from a trauma therapy perspective) former lived experiences for one or both of these partners.

The goal of Couples Counseling is whatever you want it to be.  For some couples, they seek couples counseling in order to improve their already fairly healthy relationship.  Others are seeking counseling at a time of crisis within the relationship.  Still others enter counseling hoping to figure out whether or not to continue a relationship, and if not, how to separate amicably.  No matter what your goals are (as a couple) we can work with them to develop a plan to accomplish them.

Brief couples counseling also focuses highly on developing skills, or commitments, within your relationship that you will continue to build on each week.  The idea of brief counseling is that you will be given the skills over a shorter period of time, and it's the regular and consistent implementation of these skills that will ultimately improve your relationship.  There is no set time period for Brief Couples Counseling, and this is something we will continue to discuss within the therapeutic relationship.
